AS SEEN ON BBC DRAGONS' DEN
The COVID-19 outbreak spread globally in just three months, in its wake it caused unprecedented economic disruption and left a global death toll unlike anything witnessed in modern society. But how did this respiratory virus creep upon us? Where did it come from? What is the mechanism of action? How does it spread… but more importantly, how do we stop it?
The events of this spring have taught us that we need a more coordinated global effort to prevent dangerous viruses from jumping from animal to human, better testing, greater PPE stocks and more importantly greater investment in biomedical research.

EPISODE 1 - EVOLUTION OF VIRUSES
In this episode we take to the wet markets of China to learn how COVID-19 jumped from its animal reservoir to infect human cells and how viruses mutate within a population.
EPISODE 2 - MECHANISM OF INFECTION
Episode 2 will examine the COVID-19 virus to understand how its structure allows it to access human cells. This includes developing an understanding of the SPIKE protein on the surface of the virus and its developed affinity to ACE2, a receptor on the surface of human cells.
IN THE LAB | SUSCEPTIBLE HUMAN ANATOMY
In the final episode we meet a patient with COVID-19 and lead by leading surgeons, dissect the lungs to find out how the lungs are
affected by the virus.
IN THE LAB | DEVELOPING VACCINES
The world waits with bated breath for a vaccine. In this episode we talk to experts at the forefront of biomedical research to discover how vaccines are made and if a vaccine will be the roadmap out of lockdown.
